Platforms: iOS and Android

Timeline: One year, part-time

Project status: In progress

My role: UX/UI Designer, Team Lead

Team: Dan Elliget, UX Designer

To build on the MVP of Art Sphere’s volunteer app, the UX team’s next project is focused on engagement. In this next design phase, the UX team aims to make the volunteer experience more memorable by retooling the app's UI, adding interest to the UX writing and creating bespoke graphics/animations.

Background

Responding to users with a more engaging app

Users found the MVP of Art Sphere’s volunteer app “straightforward” and easy-to-use, but not especially fun or meaningful.  The UX team’s next project focuses on improving user engagement. Fostering a deeper connection with Art Sphere through the app will hopefully lead to long-term support of the organization.

Project goal

Boost engagement by improving the app’s UI, text and images.

In this next design phase, the UX team aims to make the volunteer experience more memorable by:

  • Coordinating the app's UI with ASI's website and marketing

  • Writing copy and microcopy with more personality

  • Creating bespoke graphics and adding animations

Design principles

We started by re-examining our original design principles and updating them to fit our new objective.

“Creative” keeps the positivity, but adds in an air of fun and enjoyment. By focusing on how the user’s volunteer work is part of a creative process, we hope to better connect users to the mission of Art Sphere.

“Meaningful” remained one of our design principles, but the updated concepts hone in on the “connected” aspect.

With this minor shift in wording, we hope to remove the idea that volunteering can be complicated or burdensome, but keep the idea that the app is easy-to-use.

Design process

We are currently in the process of translating our revised design principles into a new design.

UI design

We are experimenting with designs to find a creative, simple look that will coordinate with ASI's website and social media. A consistent brand identity across these platforms will increase ASI’s credibility and promote user loyalty.

UX writing

The design team has updated the UX writing guidelines based on the new design principles. The rewrite will better communicate ASI’s values and connect more with like-minded volunteers.

Graphics & animations

We envision fun, unique graphics for the app that incorporate ASI’s watercolor motif.  ASI is currently searching for a graphic designer to help turn this vision into a reality.

The UX team is also looking into appropriate places for simple animations to add interest and increase engagement.

What I'm learning

New skills

This project is broadening my design skillset to include UI design and motion design. UI design is basically functional aesthetics, and I'm enjoying the challenge of finding the perfect blend of form and function for the app's design. Incorporating motion design has challenged me to think beyond static layouts to consider how animation can both guide and delight users.

Emotional design

Focusing on engagement has encouraged me to consider the emotional impact of each of my design decisions. This project is making me more aware of how subtle design cues can create a more engaging, emotionally resonant experience for users.
